About US!

About the bride

Kathleen Mary Offenheiser was born on May 2, 1984 in Columbus, OH and moved to Columbia, MD two months later with her parents and two brothers, Michael and David. After living in Maryland for 19 years, her parents then moved to Virginia Beach due to her father's job promotion. After living in VA Beach for two years, her parents moved to Orange County, CA in 2005 to be closer to her brothers and their grandchildren. Katie spent two years in California before returning to the east coast to finish her nursing degree at Catholic University of America. With a few college detours, Katie finally accomplished her childhood dream of becoming a nurse just like her mother! Katie is currently working at Children's hospital of Orange County on their pediatric intensive care unit.

About the groom

Nolan Shields McCready was born February 10, 1984 in Pottsville, PA and grew up in Wyomissing, PA with his parents, sister Kendall, and brothers Curran and Evan. After high school he attended Penn State University. While there he was a 3 year letterman on the football team and ended his career as an Academic All-American. After graduation, he spent a short time pursuing a professional football career before moving to Washington, DC in 2008. During his year in Washington, he worked for a litigation support company and during his time there decided he would go to law school. After meeting and falling for a certain girl in Washington, Nolan decided to make the move out west to California. He is currently working in Los Angeles at the law firm Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher in the environmental litigation department as a paralegal. Nolan has future plans to attend law school in California beginning in the fall of 2011.

How we met

Katie and Nolan met in Arlington, VA on August 2, 2008 at the Clarendon Ballroom. Katie was out for the evening with her roommates and Nolan was there with a few friends of his. While Katie was with her friends on the dance floor she spotted Nolan walking across the dance floor in his bright green t-shirt. Katie grabbed her roommate and said to her, "We are following him!" and they headed toward the dance floor and waited to see if he might approach her to dance. Nolan happened to be dancing with someone else and Katie continued to wait to see if Nolan would figure out what was good for him and dance with her. Tired of waiting for fate to intercede, Katie's roommate decided to push her into Nolan and they started dancing together right away. After a few dances, the two of them got separated and Katie went off with her roommates, who then decided they were going to leave for the night. As Katie was about to walk out the door, a voice was telling her that she needed to go back and say goodbye to Nolan. She came back to the dance floor and found him and he asked if he could have her phone number before she left. A few days later they met for coffee in Old Town Alexandria and the rest is history.....

Our Proposal

When it happened

5/2/2009

How it happened

On Katie's 25th birthday, Nolan wanted to try to recreate their first date. On that first date, Nolan and Katie got coffee and sat on a bench overlooking the Potomac River. That night they sat and talked for hours getting to know each other. From that night on, Old Town Alexandria was a very special place for the two of them, so Nolan thought it was only right to propose there.

His intention was to replicate each detail, right down to the same bench, but fate did not allow for that to happen. With the ring burning a hole in his pocket, Nolan and Katie walked towards that original bench, but other people had decided to spend their night there as well. They decided to turn and walk down along the river to a more secluded area. Not too far along they came across a bench by itself across the path from a large willow tree and under a lone street lamp and sat down. All day it had been gloomy and overcast looking as if rain was inevitable, but fortunately it held off. After a few minutes of talking, Nolan decided to reference that everything had worked out perfectly with it being such a "perfect" night with the rain holding off. Then he turned to Katie and asked her if she knew "What would make it even more perfect?" She replied, "What?" at that moment Nolan bent down on one knee with the ring box opened and answered "If you said you would marry me!" Katie's face was glowing and she was grinning from ear to ear. Speechless, she managed to say "Yes!" and Nolan put the ring on her finger.

A few minutes later, as Katie stared at her newly adorned hand, a group of teenage girls walked by and noticed the ring. Asking if they had just gotten engaged, they all screamed with excitement and gave their congratulations, hugged Katie, and told Nolan he made a good choice with the ring. Shortly after they had their picture taken underneath the tree across the path and spent the rest of the night calling their loved ones to spread the wonderful news!
